Goldilocks.
Do you remember the story?
- “This porridge is too balmy.”
- “This porridge is too cool.”
- “This porridge is just right.”
That should ring a few bells.
Goldilocks goes through the same routine with the size of chairs and the firmness of mattresses while rummaging through the home of a family of bears. Even as a disc golf player, there are aspects of your putting that need fine-tuning. Or in other words: Finding what feels, you know…
“Precisely.”
Tempo is one LARGE one of them.
I've tried it before and will do it again…
I long for that soapbox.

Particularly at the pro tour level, ferocious disc golfers complain about a basket's ability to catch putts while insisting on launching putters as if Nolan Ryan himself were armed with a Classic-Blend Warden. Baskets are three-dimensional targets. To ignore the pace is to ignore this undeniable fact. But enough with the problem – Let's focus on a solution.
I don't recommend permanently changing your backyard exercise basket or doing anything extreme. But if spitting is so recurrent that it leaves you with huge clumps of hair on your pillow every morning, try removing the chains from it entirely—at least for a putting session or two.
And yes…
I'm earnest.

This is the best way to learn to “paint the stick” with your putter.
Obviously the accuracy improves.
However, the hidden beauty of this method is that for an actual putt to occur, tempo must be taken into account – there is no way around it. If it's too tender, you'll hit the front of the cage. Too strenuous and it will bounce off the center bar, assuming you are right enough to even hit it.
Remember: Goldilocks.
“Precisely.”
And before you start whining, yeah…
This is absolutely doable.
And comical, might I add:
If a single Festivus pole can “catch” your putts, a net of chains certainly will too. Less A-to-B and more up and down with your putter's trajectory – you'll get the hang of it.
This is also a great parlor trick when setting leagues.
The weather is getting colder…
Practice it. Perfect it.
Flaunt it.
