I can't remember where I learned that…
If I could, I would give credit where it is due.
Regardless of whether you like this tip or not, I would appreciate any praise.
Never a problem for me.
The hardest skill in disc golf is probably throwing straight. I'll go into more detail on how to do that in a future article. But until then, know this much: choosing the right disc is half the battle. Seriously, that's it. For each type of disc, here are my favorite flyers for throwing straight:
- The Ruby flies straight.
- The Mako3 is underrated.
- The Monarch is extremely strange, but I love him.
- The Nuke SS is designed for automatic (straight) distance.
But where is the best place to learn to throw straight?
DGPT: Niklas Anttila
The course itself is not a bad option.
Plus, it's where you'll one day showcase your straight-throwing prowess.
But it is not the best pace…
Ready for it?
Go to a high school football field.
But ONLY if the goal posts remain upright all year round.
When you get there, stand on the 50-yard line and try to throw between the two goal posts. And I'm not talking about a spike hyzer that lands on the ground between them. From the hand to the flight to the touchdown, your discs should NOT Leave the space in between free – this is a complex task.
All the benefits of field work, but with a real goal.
For those of you counting at home, that's 18.5 feet from left to right.
Brutal, I know.
You won't become perfect, but you'll get better quickly.
When I retrieve my discs from where they landed, I also try to hit my sack, which is right in the middle of the soccer field. The closer you get, the better you feel.
“Let’s eat beans at every meal.”
Rhymes aside, as straightforward as this may sound, the next time you go to the golf course and come across a narrow tunnel on the tee, you will be amazed at how much you have improved.
I admit: I am a man who often resorts to exaggeration.
It is not – it works.
Try it with me.
