Minding Your Manners in the Disc Golf Community
It’s no secret that Disc Golf has been growing exponentially in popularity over the recent years. As more new players join the scene, it’s essential to introduce and reinforce good etiquette rules to ensure a pleasant playing experience for everyone involved.
Eyes on the Basket
One crucial aspect of disc golf is to keep your eyes on your target – the basket. Observe the disc’s descent, and never assume it has landed until you’ve got a clear visual confirmation or heard the satisfying “cling” of the disc on the chains.
(Note: Remember to stand back and allow others an unobstructed viewing angle when retrieving your missed shots.)
Right of Way
When approaching the tee shot, always yield to established players who have already gone through the gate. Observe the direction of throw and let players complete their shots before you step aside.
(Tip: If you’re unsure what the flow of play entails, ask your playing opponent or the group ahead where you should be standing wait.)
Respect the Hole
Treat each hole with delicacy, respecting the tee box, the fairways, and the surrounding scenery. Avoid stepping on delicate vegetations, taking shortcuts (unless absolutely necessary), or littering.
(Hint: Most courses have specific rules designated for certain holes, but it’s always better err on the side of discretion.)
Sanctuary Areas
Pay utmost respect to the “Rough” zones and tree lines, avoiding damage caused by reckless throwing or taking shortcuts. In case the disc lands in the jungle, be mindful of your retrieve, taking extra care when navigating dense undergrowth (and consider having a repair kit handy for minor tears).
(Tip: If you find yourself dislodging an over-mature tree or causing more harm than good, opt for a temporary withdrawal or play from a more accessible entry point.)
